Sports Performance and Hypnosis

The list of athletes who use and have used hypnosis as the way to strengthen the most important part of any sport performance, the mental part of the game, is a long list. The easiest and most effective practice that takes place is before the field, track, course, court or ice rink… is in the athletes mind. Hypnosis helps with the outcome as the athlete first sees it in pre-game preparation but it also allows the athlete to be more relaxed, which in turn allows for improved sports performance. When an athlete is in a slump it’s not because they forgot their skills and how to play their sport, they lost their mental edge. The mental edge is maintained and strengthened through the subconscious techniques of hypnosis where the athlete is guided into the process by a facilitator or done alone as self hypnosis.

Here are just a few athletes who used self hypnosis for sports performance: Angela Bailey, the current Canadian Record Holder in the 100 meters. She holds the record in a time of 10.98 seconds. Tiger Woods has acknowledged the fact that he turns to hypnotherapy to calm his mind and improve his focus before every game he plays. In fact he is said to have been practicing it ever since he was 13. Kevin McBride a heavyweight boxer who beat Mike Tyson for the championship. “A lot of athletes use only 2% to 8% of their ability at any given time,” said McBride. “What hypnosis does is send out signals to the subconscious mind that makes you leave nothing behind.” Michael Jordan used hypnosis. It was a regular part of The Chicago Bull’s preparation, because of Phil Jackson, the head coach, who believed strongly in mental stamina.
