Will My Peanut Allergy Come Back?

Whenever I was a young child, my parents began to recognize the fact that I was having a difficult time with certain types of foods.  As it turns out, I was allergic to a lot of the foods that I was eating but it was not necessarily because I have a lot of allergies, it was because of a common factor that was in many of these foods.  This was an allergic reaction that I was having to nuts, specifically, peanuts.  I do not have an allergic reaction to other types of tree nuts because they are a different type of food, altogether.  Peanuts are legumes and they have a specific type of protein in them which I was having allergic reaction to.

My parents were very careful to keep me away from anything that contain nuts, nut oil or had been cross contaminated in some way or another with peanuts.  Unfortunately, I love the taste of peanut butter but I knew that eating just a little bit of it could possibly cause a reaction in me that would kill me.  I had felt mild reactions to it and it even had a difficult time in breathing a time or two so even from a very young age, I knew that it was not a good idea to push the situation.

As I grew older, the nut allergy seemed to disappear and I was not having allergic reactions, even when I knew I was coming in contact with cross contaminated items.  I felt really good about this but I was also very cautious not to go all out and start eating peanuts.  The reason why this is the case is because I was fearful that the reaction would show up unexpectedly and I will be caught unawares.  Even though it was good not to have to worry too much about the foods that I was eating, I was also very cautious in order to stay away from eating peanuts directly.

The fact of the matter is, if you have overcome a peanut allergy, you never know what it is going to resurface again.  The difficult part about this is that if it happens to resurface out of the blue, you may not be prepared for it as if you thought you still had it.  That is why it is a good idea that if you have a nut allergy at one point in your life, you always live as if you still had it.

Histamine and Nut Allergies

Although a lot of people have to deal with nut allergies, many of them are not aware of exactly what is going on behind the scenes that is causing these allergies.

Many of them mistakenly think that the allergy is a direct result of eating the nut but this could not be further from the truth.  Yes, you need to avoid eating them if you are having an allergic reaction to them but it is not the nuts that are causing the symptoms that you are experiencing, it is your own body.

The reason that this is the case is because that there are very specific proteins that are in nuts which do not exist in any other type of food.  If we have a nut allergy, our body actually considers these proteins to be a foreign invader that is dangerous.  In an effort to ward off this protein, our body will produce antibodies in order to fight them away.  Whenever it recognizes that this protein is in our system, it will also dump an extreme amount of histamine into our body in order to counteract its effects.

It is this histamine that is causing the symptoms that we are experiencing.
